Grades you actually buy
Bianco Carrara C/CD
The most common commercial grade. Cool white background with grey veining. C is more uniform; CD shows more variation. Used for cladding, flooring and bathroom suites. Available in slabs typically 305×155 cm, finished thicknesses 2 cm and 3 cm.
Statuario
The premium grade, whiter background, sharper grey veining. Prices run roughly 3–5× Bianco Carrara C. Used selectively for bookmatched feature walls, vanity tops, and statement furniture pieces.
Calacatta (Carrara)
A separate basin near Carrara producing whiter stone with bolder, more dramatic veining. Calacatta Vagli, Calacatta Borghini and Calacatta Oro are well-known sub-types, each from a specific quarry, each priced differently.
Real-world finishes
Polished is the traditional finish. Honed (matte) is now widely specified for floors and bathrooms because it shows fewer water marks. Brushed and leathered finishes hide etching from acidic spills better than polished and have become common on kitchen islands.
What goes wrong on real projects
Etching from lemon, vinegar and tomato is the most common complaint, calcium carbonate reacts with mild acids. Sealing reduces staining but does not prevent etching. Bookmatching requires the design team to be in Carrara to select consecutive slabs and approve before cutting; remote selection produces visible mismatches at seams.
